Thomas Homer Newberry, 89, of New Boston, Ohio, died Saturday, January 15, 2011, at Hillview Retirement Center in Portsmouth. He was born September 9, 1921, in New Boston, to the late Thomas Henry and Hattie Irene Sullivan Newberry. He was a graduate of Glenwood High School in New Boston, Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana, and retired after many years of teaching at Glenwood High School. He was a WWII veteran of the Army Signal Corps. He was a member of the First Church of God in New Boston, Ohio, where he had been a former treasurer and choir member, and was a former Shawnee State Golden Bear.

He is survived by three daughters, Cynthia Newberry, Susan Montavon, and Jane Young (Joe) of Portsmouth; three grandsons, Matthew Montavon (Kim), Josiah Young (Elizabeth) of Ft. Thomas, KY, and Jacob Young, of Athens, OH; two great-grandchildren, Emerson Kate and Carter Matthew Montavon; and one brother, Howard Newberry of Portsmouth. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Jean Reynolds Newberry; brothers Eugene, Jesse, and Charles Newberry; sister, Lillian Kyser; and four siblings who died in infancy, Forest, Kenneth, Harold, and Betty Jane.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at the First Church of God in New Boston, Ohio, with Pastor Acy Gibson officiating. Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Portsmouth. Friends may call at the D.W. Swick Funeral Home in New Boston, Ohio, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and at the church from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Thomas and Irene Newberry Scholarship Fund at Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana, 46012.
