Ricky L. Shump, 76, a beloved member of his community and a dedicated family man, passed away on March 15, 2025, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Born on April 24, 1948, in Portsmouth, he lived a life marked by service, love, and a passion for his family.
Rick retired from the New Boston Police Department, where he served proudly as a dispatcher. His career allowed him to foster connections with both the police officers he admired and the community he cherished. He frequently enjoyed riding around in police cruisers with officers, showcasing his unwavering support for law enforcement.
A proud veteran, Rick served in the United States Army, embodying the spirit of dedication and commitment. His educational journey came to a significant milestone when he graduated from Glenwood High School in 1966, setting a foundation for his future endeavors.
Rick's passions extended beyond his career and military service. He had a profound love for his family, especially his grandchildren, Gavin, Keaton, Beau, and Easton, as well as his great-grandchildren, Piper, Kinsey, Rayden, and Waylon. He cherished the time spent with them, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
In his leisure, Rick found joy in watching the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Reds, as well as following the Ohio State University sports teams. His interests also included taking walks, appreciating the simple joys of life.
He is survived by his loving wife, Debbie Shump; their daughter, Nikki Archie (Randall) of Greenup, KY; his brother, Gail Parlin (Lisa) of Columbus; and his sister, Candy Childers of Florida. He is also remembered by his niece, April (Matt) Floyd of Wheelersburg.
Rick was preceded in death by his mother, Dolores (Parlin) Shump, and his sister, Sue Dingus.
Friends and family are invited to honor Rick's memory at SWICK BENTLEY FUNERAL HOME located at 1104 Harrisonville Ave, New Boston, OH 45662. A visitation will take place on March 19, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM, providing an opportunity for loved ones to pay their respects and celebrate the life of this remarkable man. Interment will follow at South Webster Cemetery with military graveside rites presented by the James Dickey Post #23 of the American Legion.
