TRUMAN

On Tuesday, September 5, 2023, both Paul Richard Truman, and his wife Martha June Truman, passed from this earth.  Paul passed at approximately 4:45 a.m. at Southern Ohio Medical Center, from extended illnesses.  And June passed at approximately 5:55 p.m.the same day, at Concord Health and Rehab Center – also a result of extended illnesses.

Paul was born to George L. Truman and Mildred (Benner) Truman, on January 25, 1934.  He graduated from Clay High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy.  Paul worked at several jobs during his earlier years: at a dairy business; furnace repairman; cabinet maker; plumber; builder; woodworker.  He then worked at the Atomic Energy plant in Piketon, until his retirement.

Paul was predeceased by his parents; sisters Lucille Lemaster and Georgetta Cattran, and his brother Charles.  He was also predeceased by his son Dale Richard Truman.  He is survived by daughters Angela Burwell and Paula Truman; daughter-in-law Amy Truman; stepsons Terry (Nancy) Chaffin and Tom (Denise) Chaffin, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

June was born to Perry Lewis Gaines and Hazel (Arledge) Gaines, on March 8, 1938.  June put school-life on-hold to raise a family in the Kingston area but then after her marriage to Paul, worked for, and received, her GED through Shawnee State University.  She also worked at DuPont – Circleville site.

Aside from her parents, and husband Paul, June was predeceased by sisters Roberta Jividen, Margie Keister, and Doris Hinty; brothers Larry and Perry Gaines Jr.; sons Mike and Mark Chaffin; and stepson Dale Truman.  She is survived by sister Linda McDowell; sons Terry (Nancy) Chaffin and Tom (Denise) Chaffin; stepdaughters Angela Burwell and Paula Truman; and daughter-in-law Amy (Dale) Truman, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

After their marriage in 1993, Paul and June enjoyed their retirement by travelling to visit relatives.  June loved flower gardening, decorating their home and their church for holidays, cooking for ‘anyone and everyone’ that needed a meal, and making sure the church ‘monthly calendar’ was updated, printed, and mailed to members.  Paul enjoyed vegetable gardening, tending to his koi fish ponds, and spent countless hours on a variety of woodworking projects.  He has made, sold, and given-away MANY wooden bowls, vases, jars, and Christmas ornaments.  In their final years they served the Mabert Road Baptist Church with distinction!  The family will be forever grateful to the ‘many’ home-care givers that helped Paul live his life to it’s fullest, as well as those caregivers and facilities that have helped June over the past several months!

A double funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at the D. W. Swick funeral home in New Boston, OH.  Family will visit at 11 a.m., then visitation will take place from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.followed by the funeral, conducted by Pastor Carlene Shaffer.  Paul will be interred in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Franklin Furnace, OH. A graveside service will be held for June, on Wednesday, September 13, at 2 p.m., at Meade Cemetery in Meade, OH, at the direction of Hill’s Funeral Home of Kingston, OH.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to:  SOMC Hospice/Palliative Care, 2201 25th Street, Portsmouth, OH, 45662.
