John Edward Gill

John E. Gill, 69, of Portsmouth died Thursday Dec. 4, 2014 at SOMC Hospice Center. He was born January 4, 1945 in Portsmouth a son of the late Wilbert and Dorothy Fannin Gill. He was a retired mechanic from the U.S. Air Force with 20 years service and a retired guard at SOCF. He was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church, Founding member of Knights of Columbus, John Paul Chapter, St Frances Outreach Center in Portsmouth and James Dickey Post 23, American Legion. John is survived by his wife, Valerie Swearinger Gill whom he married on Nov. 27, 1965 in New Boston; two sons, Jeffrey (Donna) Gill of Portsmouth and Gill of West Portsmouth; one daughter, Christina (Homer) Shaw of Oak Hill; a brother, Jerry Lee (Debbie) Gill of Lucasville; one sister, Zola (John) Jordan of Kenton and 6 grandsons, 2 granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a 2 sisters, Elnora Kurtz and Mary Ann Osborne. Services will be 11:00 Tuesday Dec. 9, 2014 at St. Monica Catholic Church with Father Joseph Yokum Celebrant . Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery with graveside military honors by James Dickey Post 23, American Legion. Visitation will be Monday 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM at D.W.
