Joan Rita Scherer

Joan Rita Scherer, 86, of Portsmouth died Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at Hillview Retirement Center. Joan was born May 16, 1924 in Portsmouth, the daughter of the late Joseph William Scherer and Nell Elizabeth Barney Scherer. Joan was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, attended Portsmouth Business College, worked at the Selby Shoe Company and later retired from the Ohio Consolidated Telephone Co. Joan was a member of St. Monica's Catholic Church and was very active raising flowers for the alter, helping with the Mercy Meals and food and clothing distribution to the needy. She was a member of St. Peter's over 55 Club, Catholic Ladies of Columbia and loved her animals. Joan is survived by many cousins and friends. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM Friday, Sept. 3, 2010 at St. Monica's Catholic Church with Father Joseph Yokum officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter's Cemetery. Friends may call at D.W. Swick Funeral Home in New Boston from 5 to 8 Pm on Thursday where a Rosary service will be held at 8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hillview Hospice or St. Monica's Church.
