Jesse W. Newberry, 91, of New Boston died Thurs. June 11, 2009 at Hill View Retirement Center. He was born July 25, 1917 in Garrison, KY to the late Thomas and Irene Sullivan Newberry. He was a member of First Church of God in New Boston where he had been a trustee, usher and treasurer. He was a captian in the U.S. Army where he served in the Pacific Theater and the 32ND Div. at Luzon. Jesse was a graduate of Glenwood High School, Rio Grande College and Miami University where he earned a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education. He retired in 1982 from the New Boston Local Schools where he taught for 45 years; along with his wife, he owned and operated Newberry's Dept, store in New Boston until 1979. He was past president and coach of the New Boston Little League where he took the first Ohio team to the Little League world series in 1960 and finisher 5 th in the world. He was a charter member of New Boston Kiwanis, on the Board of Trustees at SMH (now SOMC) and theYMCA, a Shawnee Golden Bear, member of Scioto Co. Retired teachers assoc., James Dickey Post American Legion and was a New Boston Councilman. Jesse is survived by his wife, Maralyce Williams Newberry whom he married on Aug. 23, 1947 in Montclair, N.J.; one son, William L. Newberry of Richmond, VA.; two daughters, Cheryl Bertschman and husband Chuck of DeGraff, OH. and Elaine Evans of New Boston; three brothers, Eugene Newberry of Anderson, IN., Thomas Newberry of New Boston and Howard Newberry of Portsmouth; a sister, Lillian Kyser of Kalamazoo, MI. 6 grandchildren, Heather Coppel (Challie), Ryan Bertschman (Rachel), Laura Newberry (Wes King), Lesley Chermside (Alex), Alexandria Evans and Samantha Evans; 4 great grandchildren, Xavier Coppel. Morgan Coppel, Ethan Coppel and Noah Bertschman. He was also preceded in death by 4 brothers, Charles, Harold, Forest and Kenneth Newberry; a sister, Betty Jane Newberry and a grandson, Kyle Bertschman. Services will be 2 PM Mon., June 15, 2009 at First Church of God in New Boston with Pastor Acy Gibson officiating. Burial will be at Waring cemetery in Garrison, KY with military graveside honors by James Dickey Post 23, American Legion. Visitation will be Sunday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at D.W.
