Jerry Carl Wadkins, of Portsmouth, a dedicated family man and respected community member, passed away peacefully at home on December 12, 2024, at the age of 79. Born on February 15, 1945, in Portsmouth, Jerry lived a life marked by service, love, and a passion for the things he cherished.
He was a graduate of East High School, class 1963, and subsequently served his country honorably in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. Jerry's commitment to his fellow veterans was evident through his long-standing membership in the James Dickey Post #23 of the American Legion, where he served for 50 years.
Jerry had a fulfilling career, retiring from the A-plant in Piketon after 32 years of loyal service. His work was characterized by dedication, strong ethics, and a steadfast commitment to excellence.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jerry was known for his love of NASCAR and football, hobbies that brought him immense joy and a sense of community with friends and family.
Jerry is survived by his devoted wife, Linda (Ervin) Wadkins; his children: Karl David Wadkins of Indiana, Angie Vas (Chris) of Indiana, and Alyssa Beverick (Brett) of Johnstown, Ohio; and his brother Ken Wadkins (Lise) of Columbus, as well as brothers Terry Wadkins (Rhonda) of Iowa and Donnie Wadkins of New Boston. His beloved sister, Judy Wadkins Stone of Portsmouth, and sister Anita Wadkins McClaskey of Iowa also survive him, along with four stepchildren: Jenny Russell (Carlin) of McDermott, Patricia Keaton (Jeff) of Portsmouth, Gary Walters (Melissa) of Franklin Furnace, and Vurla Douglas (John) of Waverly. He was a cherished grandfather and great-grandfather, leaving behind numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who adored him.
Jerry is preceded in death by his father, Karl Wadkins; his mother, Bernice (Fannin) Wadkins; brother Ronnie Wadkins; and sisters Teresa Harrison and Roberta Wadkins.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on December 17, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM both at Swick Bentley Funeral Home in New Boston with Steven Harris Officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Franklin Furnace with military honors provided by the James Dickey Post #23 of the Amerian Legion.
Jerry’s legacy of kindness, service, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be greatly missed but fondly remembered for the joy and love he brought to the lives of many.
