Janet R. Grigsby, born on November 11, 1932, in Lashee, Ohio, and a cherished member of the New Boston community, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025, at SOMC Hospice Center. She lived a life dedicated to her family and her community, leaving behind a legacy of love and commitment.
As a graduate of Peebles High School, Janet began her career with positions at Marting's and Montgomery Ward, showcasing her strong work ethic and determination. Her entrepreneurial spirit later led her to become the former owner of the New Boston Monument Company, where she was known for her dedication and service to her clients.
Janet was not only a businesswoman but also an active participant in her community. She was a proud member of the Daughters of America and the American Legion Post 23 Women's Auxiliary. Her contributions extended to being instrumental in the establishment of the MIA and KIA memorial at Tracy Park, reflecting her deep respect for those who served the nation.
She held dear her affiliation with the Eastern Star, where she formed meaningful relationships and supported the values of the organization. Janet took great pride in her family, which includes two sons, Randy Howell and Ronald Howell, both of Portsmouth. She was blessed with two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews who will remember her warmth and kindness.
Janet was preceded in death by her loving parents, John W. and Vacal Lillian (Miller) Hemming; her first husband, Robert Howell and her second husband, Raymond Grigsby; a son, Jefrey Howell; two daughter-in-laws, Lavonne Howell and Kelley Howell; and her siblings, four brothers — Charley, Byron "Barney," Johnny, and Robert Hemming — and three sisters — Pearl Pistol, Ruby Cochran, and Norma Williamson.
The family would like to express their heartfilled thanks to the Nurses and staff at SOMC Hospice and in Lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to SOMC Hospice Center, 2201 25th St, Portsmouth, OH 45662.
A visitation will be held in her honor on February 7, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 p.m. (noon) at Swick Bentley Funeral Home in New Boston. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Franklin Furnace.
Janet R. Grigsby will be remembered for her unwavering spirit, her love for her family, and her commitment to her community. She has gone to be with the Lord, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
