Howard Adkins, 79, of Portsmouth, Ohio passed away peacefully at SOMC Hospice Center on October 5, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Scioto County on March 3, 1932 and was married to Betty Lou Clark for 57 years. From 1952 to 1954 he proudly served his country as a Corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he was a cheif medical aidman and received three Bronze Stars for heroic action. Following military service he worked for Cyclops Steel for 26 years in New Boston, Ohio and then 11 years in Mansfield, Ohio for a total of 37 years as a steel worker and member of the United Steel Workers of America Local 169. Howard spent his life helping family and neighbors. He enjoyed family gatherings and hunting with his nephew. He is survived by his wife, Betty; three daughters, Cheryl Lynn Adkins of Portsmouth, Pamela (Greg) Shonkwiler of Portsmouth and Mary Beth (Ashley) McGlone of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; four grandchildren, Andrew (Candace) Shonkwiler of West Portsmouth, Arrika (Daniel) Mains of Lucasville, Levi McGlone and Noah McGlone of Reynoldsburg; one great-grandson, Gunner Boone Shonkwiler of West Portsmouth; two sisters, Caroline (George) Smith of Garrison, KY., Freda Corey of Portsmouth; two sisters-in-law, Emma Jean Adkins and Ann Adkins both of Portsmouth; one brother-in-law, Richard Dunham of Portsmouth and many neices and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Hermance Adkins, five brothers, Roland, Earl Junior, Benjamin, Paul and Robert; two sisters, Thelma Dunham and Charlotte Sisler and a grandson, Owen McGlone. Services will be 11 AM Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at D.W. Swick Funeral Home in New Boston with Pastor Paul Hagen officiating. Interment will follow at Old Wheelersburg cemetery with military graveside honors by James Dickey Post 23, American Legion. Visitation will be Monday 5 to 8 PM and Tuesday 10 to 11 AM at D.W.
