George E. Scherer

George E. Scherer, 85, loving husband and father of Portsmouth died Fri. Nov. 15, 2013 at SOMC Hospice Center. He was born Dec. 25, 1927 in Portsmouth, a son of the late August and Catherine Hauck Scherer. He was a life long member of St. Monica Catholic Church, owner of the former Scherer's Grocery for over 40 years and was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Phillipines. George is survived by his wife, Alberta Delabar Scherer whom he married on June 20, 1959 at St. Peters in Chains Catholic Church in Wheelersburg; 3 sons, Daniel J. (Helen) Scherer and children Andrew and Amy of Portsmouth; James R. (Jennifer) Scherer and son Dylan of Portsmouth and Stephen G. (Shelley) Scherer and children Thomas and Joseph of Columbus and one sister, Helen Scherer Horton of Portsmouth and many cousins and friends. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Harold Scherer of Mansfield. The family would like to give a special thanks to SOMC Hospice staff and Georges caregivers that were too many to list. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM Wednesday Nov. 20, 2013 at St. Monica Catholic Church with Father Joseph Yokum celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Peters Cemetery with military honors by James Dickey Post 23, American Legion.. Visitation will be Tuesday Nov. 19, 2013 from 5 to 8 PM at D.W.
