Elwood Truner, 85, of New Boston died in his home Saturday morning September 15, 2012. He was born on November 23, 1927 in New Boston, the only son of the late Lonz and Hazel Clevenger Turner. He attended Glenwood High School and later married his high school sweetheart Edna Mae Hatton on May 16, 1948. Together they attended theChurch of the Nazarene in New Boston and more recently, he attended the Christ United Methodist Church in Sciotoville. He was committed to a life of service and helping people. He began his career as a public servant in 1950, serving briefly on both the fire and police departments before receiving a permanent appointment in the fire department on Jan. 1st, 1951. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1972 and in 1979, was promoted to Fire Chief where he served out the last 10 years and 4 months of his career before retiring on January 1, 1990. He loved that job from the day he started until the day he left. After retirement he continued to serve the community as a member of the New Boston Village Council for 4 years. On July 21, 2010, Elwood was presented with the only honorary diploma ever awarded by the New Boston Local School District and recognized as a member of the graduating class of 1946. He spent his retirement years enjoying traveling on family vacations, wood working and gardening. Elwood is survived by his 2 daughters; Janet (Daniel) Fetty of New Boston and Linda (Benji) DeCamp of Wheelersburg: 3 sons, David (Linda) Turner of Twin Valley, Jim (Rose) Turner of Wilton, Iowa, Larry Turner of Eden Park; 4 grandsons, Rodney (Carissa) Fetty, Chad (Cindy) Turner, Evan DeCamp and James Turner; 6 granddaughters, Michele (Darrell) Montavon, Rachel(Keenan) Perry, Leslie (Evan) Allison, Megan(Derek)Marion, Jackie Turner and Ashley(Zach) Harr; 8 great-grandsons, Daniel and Dillion Fetty, Colin Perry, Logan, Jacob and Levi Allison, Gabe Turner and Kyle Humfleet; and 7 great-granddaughters, Jessica Nowlin, Hannah and Holly Fetty, Madison Perry, Gracie Dawn Turner, Keira Humfleet and Piper Marion. He is also survived by one sister Deloris Salyers. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Edna Mae Turner, May 16, 2004 and his sister Eleanor Penn, April 8, 2006 . Services will be 11:00 a.m. Wed. Sept.19, 2012 at Christ United Methodist Church in Sciotoville with Rev. Caleb LaFond officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5p.m. to 8p.m. at D.W. SWICK in New Boston and Wednesday 10 to 11 at the church.. Condolences can be sent to dwswickfuneralhome.com.
