Age 72 of New Boston died Monday, July 25, 2016 at SOMC in Portsmouth He was born February 9, 1944 in New Boston to James and Kathleen (Copeland) Payton David graduated from Glenwood High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps He was a very active member of the Democratic Party and politics in general He was a retired steelworker and worked as a heater in the New Boston Coke plant, was past president of the local 2116 Steelworkers Union, and loved to fish and hunt.

David is survived by his wife Velma; one son Mark (Laura) Payton of New Boston; one daughter, Lori Payton Grant of New Boston; one brother, Roger Payton of Mineral, VA; two sisters, Carol Hurst (James) of Cincinnati and Linda Brown of New Boston; five grandchildren, Zach Grant, Nathan Payton, Melanie Grant, Bailey Payton, Lauren Payton In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Betty Thompson.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Church of God Prophecy in New Boston, with Brother Howard Pruitt officiating Interment will follow in Sunset Gardens in Franklin Furnace, with military honors provided by James Dickey Post #23, American Legion Friends may call Friday from 6 – 8 p.m. at D.W.SWICK-NELSON FUNERAL HOME in New Boston and one hour prior to the service at the church Online condolences may be sent to www.DWSwickNelsonFuneralHome.com
