Cynthia (Cindy) Marie Wellman, 57, of Portsmouth, took her final earthly journey to her new home in heaven on Monday, September 2, 2013 after her many years of battle with breast cancer, at home surrounded by family and friends. Cindy was born October 20, 1955 in Portsmouth, Ohio to Delores (Dee) Miller Penix, and her biological father, Darius Calvin Wellman. She was the eldest of five children, all surviving, including David Charles (Tami) Wellman, Karen Lynnette (Larry) Brown, and Paul Edward (Mary) Penix, Jr., all of Portsmouth, and Susan Maxine Wellman, of Minford. Other survivors include her mother, Dee Penix, and a special aunt, Maxine Miller (Elbie) Mathis, who helped with her care; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends. Survivors who were the greatest joy of her life were niece Abrienne Marie Hill of Nashville, TN, her goddaughters, Morgan Elizabeth Penix, Brook Alexandra Penix, and nephew, Jacob Dalton Wellman, all of Portsmouth. She was preceded in death by her dad, Paul E. Penix, Sr., (1997), her biological father, Darius Calvin Wellman, (2009), grandparents Charles (1988) and Flossie Willey Miller (2010), William and Sophronia Wellman; James and Mary Penix, and several aunts and uncles. Cindy was a 1973 graduate of Glenwood High School. She worked at Scott's Shake Shoppe before beginning her newspaper career at the Portsmouth Daily Times from 1973 - 1982, serving in many capacities including graphic designer and foreman. She then joined The Community Common as graphic designer, a newspaper that her father, Paul E. Penix, Sr. helped to establish in 1982, and continued until the paper was sold in 2007. She then served as a receptionist for Savory Foods from October 2007 until February 2012, the same month she was diagnosed with her third battle of breast cancer. Cindy became a Christian as a young teenager and attended Christ's Community Church in Portsmouth. Cindy was very active with the Portsmouth Kiwanis club, being one of the first women to join in March 1990. She served on various committees, served as the first female board member, went through the chairs and became the first female club president and became the Ohio District's Division 9 first female Lieutenant Governor. For 22 years, she was the editor of the Club's newsletter, The Rambler, earning state awards each year. She presented, at a Kiwanis International Convention, in 1990, in a workshop for club newsletters, served as a member of the Election Committee in Las Vegas and served as a judge at Ohio District Key Club Convention. Cindy's fellow club members recognized her dedication and service to her community with a George F. Hixson Fellowship Award and a Past International Presidents (PIP) award in 2001. Cindy was also named a Kentucky Colonel in 1989. A celebration of Cindy's life will be held at D.W. Swick Funeral Home in New Boston at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 5, 2013 with the pastors of Christ's Community Church officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, September 4, 2013 from 5 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at D.W. SWICK FUNERAL HOME IN NEW BOSTON. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Paul E. Penix, Sr./Community Common Scholarship Fund, c/o Scioto Foundation, P.O. Cindy was so thankful to her church, family, friends, Kiwanians and health care professionals for all their prayers and kindness during her illness.
