Catherine H. (Tackett) Sowards, 91, of New Boston passed away at her home, Monday, June 14, 2021. She was born in West Portsmouth to the late Riley and Effie (Sissler) Tackett on July 24, 1929. Catherine enjoyed baking for her family.
Catherine is survived by a son, Moses James Fitzpatrick and wife Betty Jo of Sciotodale; six daughters, Twila Bond and husband Joe of Sciotoville, Diane Fitzpatrick of Portsmouth; Willa Gilispie and husband James of London, OH, Martha Bohem of New Boston, Thea Fitzpatrick of Portsmouth, and Nila Furtaw and husband Ken of Portsmouth; a brother, Walter Tackett of Portsmouth; two sisters, Charlotte Tackett and Hazel Gee both of Portsmouth; 36 grandchildren; 50 great grandchildren; and 17 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her birth parents she was preceded in death by Walter and Florence Welch who raised her; two sons, John Fitzpatrick and Kenny Gibbs; three daughters, Judy Burton, Crystal Journey, and Velvet Sowards; two brothers, James Tackett and Carl Tackett; and two sisters, Lillie Shierry and Rose Lee Cade.
A visitation will be held on Friday June 18, 2021 from 12:00 (NOON) until 1:00 p.m. at D.W. SWICK FUNERAL HOME in New Boston with the funeral service to follow at 1:00 p.m. with interment to follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Portsmouth. Online condolences may be left at DWSwickFuneralHome.com
